QuickCap: UConn downs DePaul

The Huskies started the new year with an impressive win.

The UConn Huskies were sluggish early but took a 19-point lead into the halftime break in an eventual 85-56 win at Gampel Pavilion.

Dan Hurley’s squad now holds a 12-2 record (2-1 Big East) going into a two-game road trip against Butler (Friday, Jan. 5) and Xavier (Weds, Jan. 10).

Playing without Donovan Clingan, UConn started Stephon Castle, Tristen Newton, Cam Spencer, Alex Karaban, and Samson Johnson. Head coach Dan Hurley also showed an interesting small-ball lineup that propelled the Huskies ahead by double digits with 6:23 left in the first half.

Spencer led all scorers with 20 points while Karaban added 17 as the two combined to shoot 14-of-20 from the field and 7-of-11 from three. The Huskies shot an impressive 58 percent from the field, 46 percent from three (12-of-26), and 90 percent (9-of-10) from the free-throw line while assisting on 23 of their 32 made baskets.
