Rapid Recap: Creighton stuns No. 1 UConn
The Huskies' 14-game winning streak is snapped as the Bluejays ran away with this one early.
UConn men’s basketball started its road battle against No. 15 Creighton with a 7-0 lead, but it wasn’t enough. The Bluejays shot lights out as they handed the Huskies their worst loss of the season, 85-66.
UConn (24-3, 14-2) struggled after Donovan Clingan was forced to sit with two fouls. Head coach Dan Hurley inserted the big man back into the game later in the first half, something he rarely does. But it didn’t stop the bleeding, as Greg McDermott’s squad took a 14-point lead into the halftime break.
UConn got within 10 in the second half but never any closer. Tristen Newton led all scorers with 27 points, while Creighton had four starters over 12 points each, led by 20 from Steven Ashworth and efficient performances from Trey Alexander and Ryan Kalkbrenner.
Next up, the Huskies are home against Villanova with ESPN’s College Gameday visiting Storrs on Saturday. The game tips off at 8 p.m. from Gampel Pavilion.
The Wildcats are 15-11 after beating Butler on Tuesday night and ranked 29th in KenPom (62nd Offense, 20th Defense), which projects a 72-62 Husky win. UConn has moved down from second to third in the overall efficiency rankings.
