Rapid Recap: UConn handles Bulter
The Huskies led from start to finish as they sweep the Bulldogs for the fourth season in a row.
UConn men’s basketball pushed its winning streak to 11 after taking care of Butler at the XL Center, 71-62, to capture a regular-season sweep of the Bulldogs and stay undefeated against their program all-time.
The Huskies (21-2, 11-1 Big East) jumped out to a 6-0 lead and maintained control from there, as Donovan Clingan and Cam Spencer got going early and often in the first half, finishing it with 12 points each as only four Huskies had scored by halftime. Spencer finished with a team-high 20 points while Clingan had 18.
Tristen Newton left the game after favoring his ankle late in the first half but returned five minutes later to close out the period. Hassan Diarra came in to give UConn some solid minutes, scoring nine in the first half.
Butler scored the first half’s last six points and the first five points of the second half to close the lead down to three, but that was as close as it’d get. After quiet first halves, Alex Karaban, Stephon Castle, and Newton got going at various times while Clingan and Spencer stayed locked in as well.
Karaban was playing in his first game since missing the St. John’s game due to an ankle injury suffered in the previous contest against Providence. He started on Tuesday night, playing 34 minutes.
Next up, the Huskies head to Washington DC to take on Georgetown for the two teams’ second meeting of the season. UConn won the first matchup, 80-67, on January 14 at the XL Center.
The Hoyas are 0-4 since then, losing close ones on the road at Providence and Xavier. They hold an 8-13 record in Ed Cooley’s first season at the helm and will be playing at Seton Hall on Wednesday night before hosting the Huskies.
