Jones to Baltimore

UConn DT Travis Jones was the 12th pick in the third round of the NFL Draft Friday night, going to the Baltimore Ravens. Analysts say the Ravens got great value on Jones at that slot, and Jones has a solid chance of being in the rotation for them immediately. It’s a great situation for the New Haven native.

Looking ahead, Ryan Van Demark and Omar Fortt are the other UConn hopefuls. If they don’t end up being picked, they should land free agent contracts somewhere. Both have done workouts and visits with multiple teams, so them and a few other Huskies could end up getting rookie camp invites at the very least.

Lou Lopez Senechal transfers from Fairfield - Geno Auriemma dipped into the transfer portal to bring in the reigning MAAC player of the year.

Baseball

More midweek victories - The Huskies are now 10-2 in midweek games, as they battled to beat Northeastern in extra innings and took down Yale.

Victory over Villanova - UConn won another Big East series, as the Huskies walked it off on Sunday after splitting the first two games with the Wildcats.

Men’s Hockey

2022-23 non-conference opponents nearly set - Aside from a visit from Alaska Fairbanks, the Huskies could appear at Madison Square Garden.

Football

Steven Krajewski to transfer - The quarterback was in the running to start after doing so for a significant part of 2021, but appears to be the odd man out with Taquan Roberson and Tyler Phommachanh likely in the lead for starting duties.

Jones picked by Baltimore - The 41st Husky ever selected in the NFL Draft.

Highlights

Stonehill transfer Matt Donlan has a cannon of an arm behind the plate. He caught his 15th runner stealing of the season with this great chuck on Wednesday against Yale.

Memory Lane

We’re heading back nine years to the 2013 NFL Draft, which has the distinction of the most Huskies hearing their names called: five.

Four of them were defensive players, three of which went within seven picks in the third round. The trio was headlined by Blidi Wreh-Wilson, who played eight seasons, three with Tennessee and five in Atlanta, recording four interceptions and 129 tackles along the way.

Tight end Ryan Griffin was selected by Houston in the sixth round and is still active, as he signed a one-year deal with Chicago in April. The New Hampshire native has 14 touchdowns on 206 catches for 2,158 yards in his career.

Parting Thoughts

UConn baseball and softball are both having great seasons, and next week you’ll get a good chance to see them both if you want to make the trip over to Storrs. On May 6, UConn is hosting a fanfest at the new Morrone Stadium before the 6 p.m. baseball and softball games.

Softball is 33-14 and dominating conference play with an 18-4 record in the Big East. Baseball is 35-8 and has also been rolling through conference play, losing its first Big East game last weekend to Villanova. If nothing else, it’s a great opportunity to enjoy the lovely weather, see all the updates to that part of campus, and take in a game at the beautiful Elliot Ballpark.
