UConn men’s basketball enters the 2020-21 season having received votes in the AP Preseason Poll for the first time since the 2016-17 campaign. That year, the Huskies got off to an abysmal start, losing to Wagner and Northeastern before barely edging out Loyola Marymount to get their first win of the season.

When you consider that the 2016-17 team failed to defeat any top-25 opponents, a strong case can be made that the high-water mark of the forgettable season was their game against rival Syracuse in the Tire Pros Classic. That matchup took place at the majestic Madison Square Garden and the showdown-turned-slugfest was a battle until the last whistle. UConn fans who made the trip to NYC left their home away from home happy, having watched their Huskies beat the Orange in a nail-biter, 52-50.

UConn was led by Rodney Purvis and Jalen Adams who combined for 37 of UConn’s 52 points, and a young Christian Vital provided two clutch free throws with the game tied at 50 to seal the victory for the Huskies. This win brought UConn to 6-4 on the season but not much else went their way the rest of the year, however, as they finished an underwhelming 16-17 and 9-9 in the AAC.
