Headlines

Flying High After Taming the Panthers

The Huskies dominated FIU on Saturday, improving to 4-2 in what was by far the team’s most complete showing of the season. It was also head coach Jim Mora’s 100th career win!

Fagnano delivered a career performance, efficiently throwing for four touchdowns and 355 yards. The Husky defense managed five sacks and five interceptions in the blowout as Amir Runwick, Cam Chadwick and Aaron Key all snagged interceptions in addition to forced fumbles by Byrun Parham and Osiris Gilbert.

UConn has moved up to 68th overall in the SP+ rankings and is likely to be favored in next Saturday’s road game at Boston College (1-4, ranked 87th in SP+).

National recognition is rising for UConn through six weeks, with Fagnano earning weekly Manning Award recognition while ESPN, CBS, and PFN included the Huskies in their bowl projections. Fagnano, Skyler Bell, and Cam Edwards are among the national statistical leaders at their position.

Being 4-2 heading into the bye is solid work. Now the Huskies have a chance to get a notable win at BC before a road game at Rice (3-3, 105th SP+) and their next home game on Nov. 1 against UAB (2-3, 116th SP+).

Joey Muldowney to represent UConn at 2025 Spengler Cup

Joey Muldowney is headed overseas this winter to compete in the 2025 Spengler Cup as a member of the US Collegiate Selects team. The junior forward is one of the first five players announced to the Collegiate Selects team, which will compete in Davos, Switzerland for the duration of the six-day tournament.

Husky hockey is also celebrating three former players on NHL rosters to open the season.

Muldowney joins Aiden Fink (Penn State), Mac Gadowsky (Penn State), Jake Livanavage (North Dakota), and Alex Tracy (Minnesota State), with the rest of the roster to be revealed in the coming weeks.

In years past, the tournament has featured six clubs or teams from Europe and North America, though this is the first year a team comprising entirely college hockey players will compete. Representatives from all six conferences will make the team, with four already staking their claim.

In the meantime, Muldowney has been busy getting his season underway with the Huskies. UConn dropped its opener against Colorado College, losing 4-2 despite scoring first in the game’s opening minute. The next night, the Huskies scored five unanswered goals to even the series. All told, UConn dropped to No. 13 in this week’s USCHO poll, down from No. 10 the week prior. As for the women’s team, it split with No. 9 Clarkson, though gained one spot nationally, up to No. 11.

It’s a party in Storrs this weekend, with both teams set to welcome ranked opponents for weekend sets. The women’s host No. 15 Princeton on Friday at 2:30 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m., while the men’s hit the ice next against Ohio State in their home opener Friday at 7 p.m.
