Rapid Recap: UConn mows down Marquette, 81-53

The Huskies didn't have their best shooting night but their depth and defensive prowess pushed them ahead.

Top-ranked UConn men’s basketball made minced meat of No. 4 Marquette in a marquee matchup Saturday afternoon at the XL Center, 81-53.

After a tightly contested start to the game, which was tied at 18 at one point, UConn (24-2, 14-1 Big East) pulled ahead in the middle of the first half. The Huskies were making stop after stop as Marquette star Tyler Kolek was held to five points on 2-of-7 shooting in the first half and finished with seven.

UConn’s shooting wasn’t so hot early on but that didn’t stop Dan Hurley’s squad from opening up a double-digit lead late in the first half and going into the break up 40-26. Donovan Clingan led the Huskies with 17 points and 10 rebounds as four of them finished in double figures.

The Husky barrage continued in the second half. Despite some sloppy play out of the gate, the Huskies kept their foot on the gas as Marquette simply did not have any answers offensively.

Next up, the Huskies are visiting Creighton on Tuesday for their second meeting after demolishing the Bluejays in January, 62-48.

Since that game, Greg McDermott’s squad is 5-2 with losses to Butler and Providence while scoring wins over Xavier and Seton Hall. They’re ranked 13th in KenPom (18th Offense, 24th Defense) and hold an 18-7 record, currently sitting tied for third in the Big East at 9-5.
